This has so far been beneficial for most counties. I know that some counties have wisely used this funding to increase their number of school nurses. A few counties, however, are not using this funding as it was intended. Vague language in the bill has led to some abuses of this additional funding. Be sure that you know how much money your county received and how much additional funding they will receive each year, and how they are spending that funding. If it is not for professional student support services, then that funding is not being appropriately used.
WVASN must continue to maintain a significant presence at the legislature to make sure that this funding is used as it was intended. Now that we are in a separate funding category, we will have to continue to work to be sure we are not forgotten when raises and/or benefits are given to other professional education staff.
Now is the time to make sure that your elected representatives and those running for legislative seats know what you do, and the importance of your role to the lives of your students. Be sure to contact those running in your district. Let them know how your district is using the Step 5 money that was intended for Student Support Professionals. They want your vote and we want to make sure that, if they win election or re-election, they will listen to us. Also, be sure to let your WVASN representatives to the WVNPAC know which candidates have taken the time to listen to you and care about your issues. These are the candidates that WVNPAC wants to endorse and support.
