Strategic Plan 2005-2008

Mission Statement: The mission of the West Virginia Association of School Nurses, Inc. is to promote the health and wellbeing of students, staff, and community, while coordinating quality health care in the school setting, and enhancing the practice of school nursing.

Goal I

WVASN will support and assist West Virginia's school nurses in providing quality health services and health education for all students.

  1. Collaborate with the Council of School Nurses to develop an orientation manual for newly employed school nurses.
  2. Provide an orientation session for newly employed school nurses during the fall conference.
  3. Collaborate with the West Virginia Department of Education to provide mentors for newly employed school nurses.
  4. Work with the West Virginia Department of Education to continue providing quality educational opportunities relevant to to school nursing issues and practice.
  5. Collaborate with the West Virginia Department of Education to develop and implement a statewide School Health Services Quality Assurance tool.
  6. Collaborate with the West Virginia Department of Education to develop standardized school health services and practice within the state.

Goal II

WVASN will support and encourage school nursing research.

  1. Identify individuals doing research related to school health within West Virgina and provide this information on the WVASN web site.
  2. Provide one educational offering on research at each fall conference.
  3. Explore ways to utilize the National Association of School Nurses and other nursing research grants.

Goal III

WVASN will promote the role, effectiveness and visibility of school nurses and school nursing practice in West Virginia.

  1. Promote and advocate for the hiring of a full time school nurse consultant at the state level.
  2. Collaborate with key state plicy makers to implement an improved school nurse to student ratio.
  3. Develop and implement the School Nurse of the Year and the School Nurse Administrator of the Year recognition programs.
  4. Recruit school nurses throughout the year to serve on various state committees and task forces.
  5. Improve and maintain the WVASN web site.
  6. Create a logo to be used on all WVASN communications.
  7. Develop an informational brochure promoting the role of the West Virginia school nurse.
  8. Develop partnerships and collaborate with other health-related organizations and groups.

Goal IV

WVASN will support and promote seamless data links among counties.

  1. Encouage documentation of immunization records onto the West Virginia Education Information System.
  2. Encourage documentation of screening results onto WVEIS.
  3. Collaborate with the WV State Department of Education to assure that all school nurses have a computer, WVEIS access and access to WVEIS training.
  4. Collaborate with the WVDE to obtain school nurses access to the West Virginia State Immunizations Information System.

Goal V

WVASN will support and promote Wellness programs.

  1. Facilitate the implementation of Healthy People 2010.
  2. Provide training workshops for school nurses to have the opportunity to become worksite coordinators for the PEIA Pathways to Wellness Program and/or other wellness programs.
  3. Seek grant and/or partnership opportunities to provide programs and services for members regarding obesity and weight management.
  4. Develop and implement a plan to advocate student health physicals prior to school entry.
  5. Collaborate with the WV State Immunization Program to promote the availability of immunizations to local providers for students and employees.
  6. Collaborate with the West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program and the Office of Maternal and Child Health to enhance services provided for kindergarten pre-enrollment.

Goal VI

WVASN will be structured and governed for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in advancing its mission.

  1. Provide an orientation workshop for newly elected officers.
  2. Recruit all school nurses to become members of WVASN.
  3. Encourage WVASN members to join NASN.
  4. Utilize the expertise of board members and committee chairpersons in accomplishng WVASN goals.
  5. Complete WVASN incorporation process.
  6. Strive for each RESA to be represented on the Board.
