WVASN Strategic Plan
Strategic Plan 2008 - 2012
WVASN's strategic plan governs the actions of the WVASN Board and the membership through the next four years. This strategic plan was approved during the 2008 WVASN General Business meeting, held at the Fall Conference on Friday, November 7. This plan will be monitored and may be revised yearly if indicated.
Goal I
WVASN will support and assist WV school nurses in providing quality health services and health education for all students.
- WVASN will collaborate with the WV Department of Education in assuring that all school nurses have adequate space and equipment to provide school health services.
- WVASN will continue to collaborate with the WV Department of Education to implement a statewide School Health Services Quality Assurance tool.
- WVASN will establish new relationships and strengthen past relationships with other state and local organizations that are committed to student health advocacy.
- WVASN will increase awareness through association membership of professional development opportunities and access for continuing education, state and national school nurse certification and special recognitions.
Goal II
WVASN will support and encourage school nursing research
- WVASN will identify individuals doing research related to school health within WV and provide this information on the WVASN web site.
- WVASN will promote school nurse research initiatives by offering research initiative sessions at annual conferences or school nurse institutes.
- WVASN will increase membership awareness of research grant opportunities through WVASN and NASN, and provide information on the WVASN web site.
Goal III
WVASN will promote the role and effectiveness of school nursing practice and the benefits to WV students of having an acceptable and safe school nurse/student ratio.
- WVASN will continue to promote the hiring of a full time school nurse consultant at the state level.
- WVASN will maintain and strengthen relationships with state legislators by continuing to educate key leaders about priority issues in school health.
- WVASN will continue to work for a safe school nurse to student ratio mandate, promoting the national recommendation of one school nurse for each 750 students.
- WVASN will promote school nursing accomplishments and importance by continuing to implement the School Nurse of the Year and the School Nurse Administrator of the Year recognition programs.
- WVASN will continue to collaborate with Schools of Nursing that offer the School Nurse Certification Programs and with the WVDE to improve the process and access to School Nurse Certification.
Goal IV
WVASN will support and promote wellness programs
- WVASN will encourage school nurses to continue to work with wellness programs, such as PEIA Pathways to Wellness, to promote healthy lifestyles among staff members.
- WVASN will maintain an active partnership with the WV Cardiac Project to promote student and family cardiac health education and health promotion activities to decrease morbidity, obesity and other health disparities resulting from poor nutritional choices and inactivity.
- WVASN will seek grant and /or partnership opportunities to provide education regarding student obesity and weight management programs and resources for staff, students and families.
Goal V
WVASN will be structured and governed for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in advancing its mission.
- WVASN will develop a notebook for all WVASN Board officers giving basic information and job descriptions.
- WVASN will recruit all school nurses to become members of WVASN and NASN
- WVASN will continue to educate WVASN members about the benefits of unification with NASN.
- WVASN will find ways to recognize and utilize the experience and expertise of Past Presidents.
- WVASN will make every effort to include all RESA?s in decision making activities.
